Advocacy Activities – June 2020

The Alliance’s Advocacy & Policy Committee met by phone on May 21 to discuss a variety of topics. Most of the discussion was COVID-related and how the crisis is currently impacting fraternals and the potential impact on the sector in the future. The group discussed two states that will be reviewing all tax preferences in 2021 – Washington and Hawaii – which years before had presented challenges for fraternals. Drew Goesl from the Alliance’s federal lobbying firm Capitol Counsel provided an update on legislative activity in DC and how the Alliance and members can remain connected with legislators when meetings and events are being conducted virtually for now. At the June 4 Board Meeting, members will work out a proactive strategy to communicate the value of the fraternal tax exemption in these two states and others that will undoubtedly be looking for revenue sources due to budget shortfalls caused by the virus.
