Advocacy Activities – April 2021

Washington State
Every ten years the Joint Legislative Audit & Review Committee (JLARC) reviews tax exemptions in the state of Washington. This year a fraternal exemption was up for review, and the dedicated members of the Alliance’s Advocacy and Policy Committee and STEP-UP Task Force were prepared for any necessary challenges or activations.

As the legislative session winds down in Washington, we have heard nothing but positive things about the fraternal exemption being classified as “essential” with no further review. We will share a final update on this issue in the May edition of Advocacy Plus.

Solvency Legislation
With state legislatures in a more secure place than last year, the Alliance is moving ahead with introducing fraternal solvency bills in Michigan and Ohio. We’re excited to have two great lobbying teams in place that are beginning work this month. With both Ohio and Michigan legislatures meeting year-round, we’ll move forward strategically and keep you updated on legislative progress.

The Fraternal Pinboard has just been updated with new stories of service by fraternals across the country. Showcasing fraternal movement highlights in one place, the Fraternal Pinboard is the perfect place to find inspiration.

This important information is used to inform legislators, regulators, and other key audiences about the monetary and service contributions fraternals provide to their communities. We are also asking societies to inform us of any COVID-19 aid that your organization is/has been providing to members and communities.
