Board Meeting Update

The Alliance Board of Directors met on June 4 for their quarterly meeting. A summary will appear in the July Chair of the Board report and will include an update on their review of advocacy strategies, first quarter financials, the CEO Search process, and other important information.

Advocacy Activities – June 2020

While the inability to travel has impeded the opportunity to meet with legislators in person, we are still making progress in securing co-sponsors to the Fraternal Congressional Resolution. Thanks to efforts of Modern Woodmen of America for their work on recently signing Representative Cheri Bustos (D-IL-17) to our resolution. At the state level, the fraternal tax exemption will be reviewed during a regularly scheduled 10-year examination process in two states: Hawaii and Washington. Long-time members may recall that about 10 years ago, the Alliance needed to utilize significant resources to defend the exemption. The same will be true in 2021, and so the Board has asked the Alliance to retain local counsel in those two states and prepare to demonstrate our impact. While the Alliance collects its “local lodge report” information for these advocacy activities, we can always use more examples of events or efforts that highlight the contributions of our member societies. If you have some great examples of how your fraternal helps communities in Hawaii or Washington state, please email them to info@fraternalalliance.org.
